The Different Types of Bets in Roulette

Roulette is a casino game where a small ball rolls around a spinning wheel, and players bet on which number it will land. The game has a long history, and there are many different types of bets. The odds of winning are based on the type of bet and the house edge. There are also a number of tricks and tips that can help you win. However, if you are looking to increase your chances of winning, it is important to know the house edge and the odds of each bet type before placing your chips on the table.

In roulette, the dealer (or croupier) spins a wheel with a small ball in it. The ball stops in one of the numbered pockets on the wheel. The player who placed the bet on the number, section or color that the ball landed in is rewarded according to the betting odds for that wager.

Inside bets are those placed on the numbered area of the roulette table, including single numbers and small groups of numbers like red/black, odd/even, dozens or columns. These bets have a lower house edge than outside bets, but the payouts are less substantial.

An outside bet is any bet made on the ‘outside’ of the roulette table, covering a larger group of numbers. This includes any bet on the first, second or third dozen, as well as a bet on six consecutive numbers in two rows of the table layout. These bets pay out less than single number bets, but they offer better odds of winning.

The ‘La Partage’ rule in roulette reduces the house edge by dividing all even money bets in half, keeping half for the house and giving the other half back to the player. This is only available on European roulette wheels and reduces the house edge from 2.70% to 1.35%.

A wager that one of the odd numbers will win. Also known as a ‘Square Bet’ or ‘Quarter Bet’ in French Roulette.

A wager that all of the numbers on a line or square on the table will win. Also known as a Six Number/Line Bet’ or ‘Sixainne’ in French Roulette. A bet on the first, second or third column of numbers on the roulette layout. This bet pays out 2:1 and is similar to a Dozen Bet.
